Father who Killed Son, Dies in Officer Involved Shooting

Sacramento, CA –

“Just after 8 a.m., December 2, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a homicide on the 7600 block of Ferrell Way in Elk Grove, where the Elk Grove Police Department discovered that an 11-year-old boy had been murdered. The suspect was identified as the child’s father, 40-year-old Marvin Morales.

Morales was formerly employed as a Deputy Sheriff with our agency and was terminated in February 2024.

Elk Grove Police broadcast the suspect’s vehicle description to surrounding law enforcement agencies. Shortly thereafter, Sheriff Jim Cooper observed the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 5 near Pocket Road and immediately alerted dispatch.

Detectives from another agency had also independently located the vehicle moments earlier but had not yet broadcast their observation.

Sheriff Cooper, deputies from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, and officers from multiple allied agencies attempted to conduct a vehicle stop.

Morales fled, leading them on a vehicle pursuit that ended near Interstate 5 and Highway 12, where an officer-involved shooting ensued.

Two Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies, along with officers from other agencies, fired at Morales. Morales was struck, transported to a local hospital, and later pronounced deceased. No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.

The California Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, along with detectives from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division. Per Department protocols, the two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave.”
