SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA — San Luis Obispo Police Department officers responded to a report of an assault at the City transit center on Palm and Osos avenues on Saturday morning, November 15, 2025, at approximately 8:00 a.m.
The victim, identified as a 57-year-old transient male, was reportedly at the bus stop when he was struck unprovoked by another male. The suspect utilized a four-foot-long metal pipe in the assault, hitting the victim several times. The victim was able to avoid a third attempt by crossing the street quickly. Following the incident, the suspect fled the area by boarding a Regional Transit Authority (RTA) bus.
Investigating officers immediately coordinated with RTA to track the suspect’s movements. Information obtained from the transit agency indicated that the individual exited the bus approximately one hour later, around 9:00 a.m., in Pismo Beach.
Following the development, the description of the suspect was circulated to surrounding South County police departments. At approximately 11:00 a.m., officers from the Grover Beach Police Department located and detained a male matching the provided description.
SLOPD officers subsequently traveled to Grover Beach and confirmed the individual’s identity as the suspect. Robert Torres, a 45-year-old transient, was placed under arrest for PC 245, which is classified as felony assault with a deadly weapon.
A records search indicates that Torres has been arrested multiple times in recent years for a variety of charges including being drunk in public, various drug offense, assault, possession of ammunition, and assault. Torres’ prior arrests may be viewed here.
Torres was booked into the SLO County Jail and is currently being held without bail, meaning he will not be offered the opportunity to bond out.
