PRESS RELEASE:
North Sacramento, CA —
A man looking at a trailer to purchase in North Sacramento, was beaten and shot in the face.
The incident took place on May 24 when the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service near Elkhorn Boulevard and Marysville Boulevard, where a concerned neighbor believed they heard a gunshot and someone calling out for help.
Deputies responded to a large residential property and made contact with an adult male identified as Robert Treat, 51, and another adult male, with an apparent injury to his face.
The victim with the injury told deputies he was at the property to look at a tent trailer for sale when a second suspect, identified as Samuel Mattia, 41, shot him in the face unprovoked with what he believed was a gun.
After the shooting, the victim was assaulted with baseball bats by Mattia and another individual that the victim could not immediately identify.
Mattia then stole the victim’s wallet and car keys and drove away in the victim’s vehicle, with the victim’s friend still inside.
As deputies detained Treat and requested medical care for the victim, the victim’s vehicle was located and deputies attempted to conduct a vehicle stop.
Mattia fled on foot, but was taken into custody a short time later for a series of felony charges. Fortunately, the individual inside the vehicle was unharmed. Treat was released at the scene as any criminal involvement in this incident could not be immediately proven.
Robbery Detectives conducted a follow-up investigation into the incident and confirmed Treat’s involvement in the assault.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and took Treat into custody.
Robbery Detectives and the Sheriff’s Office North Problem Oriented Policing (POP) team executed a search warrant for the property where the incident took place to gather additional evidence.
Both Treat and Mattia are in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail and are ineligible for bail. Treat is scheduled to appear in court on June 20 and Mattia on July 10.
