“A preliminary investigation has revealed that on the morning of September 5, 2023, at approximately 6:05 AM, for reasons unknown at this time, a female pedestrian was walking within the westbound lane of SR-162, just west of Monument Hill Rd. Zer Khang of Oroville was traveling westbound on SR-162 in her Toyota Corolla and came upon the pedestrian who was in the middle of the lane. Video evidence obtained on scene revealed that Khang took evasive actions in an attempt to avoid a collision; however, due to the close proximity of the parties, she struck the pedestrian causing her to be ejected into the eastbound lane of SR-162. After the collision, Khang immediately pulled to the right shoulder of SR-162 and reported the incident.

After the initial collision, a white Hyundai traveling eastbound on SR-162 struck the pedestrian, who was within the eastbound lane. As a result of the second collision, the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries. The white Hyundai, based on evidence at the scene, sustained moderate to major damage to the front of the vehicle and momentarily pulled to the right/south shoulder, stopped, and then left the scene without making contact with any other parties. The model of Hyundai and the identity of its driver is unknown at this time.

It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision.

The Oroville Area CHP requests that anyone who has information, witnessed the event, or was involved in this collision, please contact CHP Dispatch at 530-332-1200 and reference Log # 19 from 09/05/2023.
