LOS ANGELES –Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division are investigating an alleged assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon at the location of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Hillcrest Drive.

According to a department media release, on the evening of December 4, 2022, at around 5 pm, Gang Officers from Southwest Area were responding to a request for backup.

Allegedly there was a man with a gun in the area of Hillcrest Drive and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. The officers were in a marked black-and-white police car with their sirens on.

As officers drove southbound onto Hillcrest Drive from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, they saw a dark Nissan sedan that was driving northbound in the southbound lanes.

The Nissan sped up towards the police car while being on the wrong side of the road. The officer that was driving quickly maneuvered the police car to steer clear from a head on collision.

The suspect then reportedly hit the passenger side of the police car.

The officers involved were transported to a hospital. One of the officers was checked out and released, while the other officer was checked in for further care.

The driver, identified as 21-year-old Jose Nicholas Lopez, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, with bail set at $50,000.
