“The Redwood City Police Department responded to a 911-Emergency call of a felony assault in progress.

Benjamin Chouanard, who was experiencing a mental health breakdown, attacked his mother with a hammer, striking her on the top of her head.

When officers arrived, Chouanard was in front of the residence, still within the immediate grasp of the hammer he used to assault his mother. Officers had the needed time to deescalate a tense situation and convinced Chouanard to surrender peacefully without further violence.

The victim was transported to Stanford Hospital for a fractured skull.

Benjamin Chouanard was booked into the San Mateo County Jail and is currently charged with attempted murder.

Please refer any questions or comments to Detective Sergeant Nick Perna at 650-780-7672.”
