The San Luis Obispo Police Department has announced the arrest of a local caregiver on suspicion of elder abuse.

Officers responded to a local hospital just before 9 PM on Saturday, October 10, to meet with the alleged victim, who’d been brought in by ambulance and was determined by hospital staff to be unable to care for herself.

Police say her grandson, 33-year-old David Mazza Jr., was also present, identified himself as her primary caregiver, and demanded she be released. The severity of her injuries, however, ultimately prompted officers to call in detectives for assistance.

The detectives learned that Mazza Jr., who has been the victim’s caregiver for about 10 years, has had numerous complaints filed against him with the San Luis Obispo County Adult Protective Services, and that he was not properly caring for the victim.

David Mazza Jr. was ultimately arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and booked on $50,000 bail.
