A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the attempted sexual assault of a developmentally disabled woman, as well as her mother, in Riverside.

The victim’s mother called police at around 2:30 AM on Thursday, August 20, to report someone had broken into the house and was trying to sexually assault her daughter.

Officers arrived within minutes and could see, through the window, a nude man on top of the victim. At that point they quickly made entry and detained the man, identified as Manuel Benavente.

As they assessed the crime scene, police determined Benavente had removed a screen from the window and crawled into the house naked, leaving his clothes outside. Police also say he first encountered and assaulted the victim’s mother, before eventually trying to sexually assault them both.

He has since been booked on two counts of assault with intent to rape during the commission of a burglary.
