Willits man allegedly fired at deputies amid domestic disturbance call

A Willits man has been arrested after allegedly firing shots at deputies responding to a domestic disturbance call at his residence.

Deputies responded to the 4500 block of Ridgewood Road around 4:30 AM on August 4, where the caller who’d reported the disturbance was waiting for them in the driveway. The man told deputies that the suspect, 28-year-old Jacob Everett McKey, who is a family member, was still inside the house and had made threats against other family members.

As deputies tried to get McKey on the phone, the victim was escorted off the property to be moved to a different location so as to de-escalate the situation.

However, as deputies pulled away, McKey reportedly came outside and shined a flashlight at their patrol car. The flashlight then turned to a laser pointer, and several gunshots rang out, appearing to come from where McKey was standing.

At that point, deputies called in assistance from Ukiah PD, Willits PD, and the California Highway Patrol. After about 45 minutes of de-escalation, McKey came out of the house and was taken into custody without further incident.

Sheriff’s Detectives then searched the residence and recovered a 9mm pistol with a mounted light and laser pointer, as well as two rifles, one of which is considered an illegal assault rifle under California law.

McKey remains housed at the Mendocino County Jail on $500,000 bond.
