EL DORADO – It was just before Christmas, on December 16th of 2018, when a terrible shooting occurred.

Brandy Skattebo was celebrating her birthday with her boyfriend, Michael Eugene Spiller when they got into an argument.

Spiller got his .40 caliber Glock from the bedroom and, as Brandy did the dishes, he “shot her in the back of the neck, paralyzing her immediately from the neck down.”

In the 911 call the shooter identified it as an accidental shooting.

During the investigation Spiller first said he was twirling the gun and it went off. Then he said he did indeed pull the trigger but thought the gun was not loaded.

Nearly nine months later, on September 13th of 2019, Spiller pled guilty to assault with a semi-automatic firearm. The special circumstances attached to this plea involve using a firearm in the commission of a crime and causing paralysis.

Spiller was sentenced to 24 years in prison, as part of a negotiated plea agreement.
