The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department press release announces, “Surveillance for the win … again.”

On August 9, a man named Isaiah Payne went into the Safeway on 412 Avenue, made his way to the manager’s office in the store, and allegedly stole the cellphone belonging to an employee.

Payne then walked out of the store, capture on surveillance camera as he went. Regrettably (for Payne), he also left paperwork behind that had his name on it.

With all of these clues, it didn’t take long to establish his identity as the suspect in the theft.

The Capitola Police Department found Payne in front of the Capitola Mall, still in possession of the stolen cell phone.

The SCCSO concludes, “Payne was arrested for commercial burglary and for violating the terms of his probation.”
