SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY — Around midnight on Saturday, May 4, 2019, an on-duty deputy from the Needles Sheriff’s Station was en route toward Needles when he was nearly hit by another vehicle.

He proceeded to pull the vehicle over. The driver, 35-year-old Antwon Rivers from Barstow, got out of the vehicle and began running away from the officer.

The suspect was armed with a handgun. Rather than drop it at the officer’s orders, Rivers shot at him several times in an attempt to avoid arrest. The officer fired back but was not successful in preventing Rivers’ escape.

Rivers ran behind a large vacant building and was later discovered hiding in a bathroom, thanks to the Specialized Enforcement Detail. He was arrested, booked into the Barstow jail, and charged with attempted murder on a police officer.

This is an ongoing investigation. If anyone has information pertaining to this case, please call the Specialized Investigations Division, Detective Eric Ogaz at (909) 387-3589. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can contact WeTip at (800)78-CRIME or www.wetip.com.
