Shooting in Compton Leads to Attempted Murder Charges

Police investigate shooting on June 7 (KTLA)

LOS ANGELES — On June 7, someone confronted a group of men as they stood in front of a liquor store near Atlantic Avenue and Compton Boulevard.

The suspect then got a gun and fired shots at the group.  One of the shots hit a child in the head as they sat in a passing vehicle.

One day later, 22-year-old Luis Julian Beltran Perez was arrested and charged with several counts of attempted murder and shooting at an occupied vehicle.

He also faces a special allegation that he “personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, causing great bodily injury.”

The LA County’s District Attorney’s Office press release went on to say, “The charging document also alleges that the shooting was committed for the benefit of, at the direction of, and in association with a criminal street gang with the specific intent to promote, further and assist in criminal conduct by gang members.”

Perez plead not guilty and is being held on a $9.07 million bail.

A maximum sentence for a conviction of this crime is life in prison.
