On August 19th, 2016 at around 2:30 a.m., officers received a report of multiple gun shots being fired around Prescott Road and W. Rumble Road. Soon after, there were reports of a high-speed collision.

Officers responded to the scene immediately and located a 1998 Honda Civic. The vehicle was severely damaged on one side and was struck by gunfire. Upon investigation, it had been determined that the vehicle was stolen.

Officers located the driver nearby, a 17-year-old resident of Modesto who had been ejected from the vehicle at the time of the collision.

After a series of attempts to save the driver, he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed a gunshot on the victim, along with several injuries from the crash, said the report.

A search warrant was issued in October, but no leads were found. However, another search warrant was filed in Jade Place, Manteca mid-March of this month. An arrest warrant for murder was issued for Scott Bates Jr., 33.

On March 21st, deputies located Bates and took him into custody.

He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.

According to a report, he was charged for homicide, being a felon in possession of a firearm, committing a felony while out on bail, and other enhancements.

Bates is being held without bail.
