Police Pursuit in Redondo Beach

Police await our carjacker (NBCLA)

REDONDO BEACH — On Wednesday morning, a carjacking suspect attempted to flee from police, even as his adventure was being filmed live from both the air and the ground.

It started around 7:40 AM near 68th Street and South Central Avenue in Florence.  Not long after, police spotted the stolen vehicle. And then the “slow-speed chase” began.

It went on into south Los Angeles, Inglewood, and Hermosa Beach.  At one point the man drove backwards for a bit. Also, during the incident, an unknown citizen threw an unknown object at the fleeing van (see photo).

The pursuit ended on the Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach. Then for nearly an hour nothing happened as SWAT arrived. Finally, the unidentified man surrendered, in a positive ending to this event.

Later, he was identified as 27-year-old Carlos Mercado.

Redondo Beach police announced that they had deployed drones to assist them in the pursuit.
