Suspect tries to steal ATM from campus library, makes big mess instead

EUREKA — On Saturday, January 21, at around 10:20 PM, Humboldt County Deputy Sheriffs arrived at the College of the Redwoods on Tompkins Hill Road after reports of a burglary.

Campus security reported that a white 2002 Dodge RAM had crashed through a glass wall of the library, after which the driver chained an ATM machine in the library to the pickup and tried to drive off.

In so doing, he ran over a light pole, a large rock, a metal pole, and a wooden park bench before careening down an embankment and feeling northbound on Highway 101.

The ATM didn’t make it off campus, having snapped loose from the truck.

The vehicle was eventually found parked along the highway near Fields Landing, though no suspects were found.

Anyone with information that may lead to an arrest is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251.
