ALABAMA—South Sacramento rapper Lavish D was arrested by police on Saturday, May 3 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The rapper, whose real name is Donald Oliver, had been wanted by police in connection with gang-related assaults in March.

Oliver, 29, was taken into custody in Alabama on Saturday night, said police Sacramento Police Officer Michele Gigante, after Sacramento police secured a warrant for his arrest in March. He had been arrested before as recently as November 27 on a variety of charges, including street terrorism, resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license while under the influence and possessing marijuana, along with firearms possession.

According to police, Oliver is associated with a gang on Mack Road. Tensions between that gang and others in Oak Park culminated in at least three shootings in March that left six people injured in just two days. Police say they believe the shootings were acts of retaliation between the two gangs.

The Sacramento rapper has gained some notoriety within the gangsta rap world in a rivalry with Oakland rapper Philthy Rich (Philip Beasley), who has had his own run-ins with the law. Both rappers and their associates have released songs insulting the others, termed “diss tracks”. So far the rivalry appears to have been a war of words and beats, and no actual violence between them.
