Man Arrested After Failed Kidnap Attempt

AVILA VALLEY – A Minnesota man was arrested last week after a failed attempt to kidnap a 17-year-old girl outside her home in See Canyon, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Brett Edgell

Brett Allen Edgell, 26, of Minneapolis, MN, was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, felony auto theft, attempting to evade a peace officer in a reckless manner, and resisting arrest.

Deputies received a call about 10:25 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, regarding the alleged kidnap attempt in the 1800 block of Pippin Lane in See Canyon, a rural neighborhood near Avila Beach.

Edgell attempted to order the unidentified teen into his vehicle, which was reported stolen out of Nevada. The girl refused the suspect’s commands, ran inside her home and locked the door, sheriff’s officials said.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect reportedly led police on a short pursuit, which ended when Edgell attempted to ram one of the pursuing patrol vehicles. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle with deputies, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
