Apple Valley Man Dead After Gunshot

According to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department, an Apple Valley man was killed when his brother-in-law allegedly shot him at a home in Johnsondale late Tuesday night. Deputies responded to the 100 block of Mountain 99 at around 10:30 p.m. where they found Peter Slenka, 52, dead from a gunshot wound to the upper torso. The victim’s brother-in-law, Ralph Zinck, 53, was still at the residence and attempted to give first aid to the victim, according to sheriff’s reports.

The two men had been drinking and Slenka was showing off a new hand gun, according to police. Zinck reportedly did not know the gun was loaded and it discharged as he was handling it. Zinck was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, according to sheriff deputies.

“This is one of these things that get out of hand due to drinking,” said Detective Richard Ramirez. “Anyone having information should call me at 559-733-6211 or they can send anonymous information by sending a text message or email to TCSO@tipnow.com or call 1-800-TIPNOW.”
