UC Students Popped After Witness’s Quick Tip

IRVINE, CA – Quick thinking and a report made by a witness lead to the arrest of two UC students, suspected of burglarizing parked cars.

Kevin Song, 21, of Irvine and a UC Irvine student, and Rao Fu, 21, also of Irvine and a UCLA student, were taken into custody around 1:30 am Friday, according to police.

A witness saw the two men ransacking a car parked in the 19000 block of Sierra Inez Road, near UC Irvine. As they fled, the witness was able to get the number of the license plate on their get away car and relay it to police.

Police were able to run a computer check on the fleeing car’s plate and discovered the vehicle was registered to an address on Saronna in Irvine.

Officers went to the address and were able to capture the suspects as they arrived at the location. Property from the vehicle that the two had been seen rummaging through was found in their possession as well as additional property believed to have been stolen in other thefts.

Further investigation revealed that the suspects had burglarized no less than two parked vehicles in the area of Sierra Inez, and possibly several more in the area of Deerfield and Culver.

Items recovered included GPS units, jewelry and a briefcase.

Police have been able to identify two victims but believe there are others that have yet to discover they’ve been victimized. Because of this, police encourage anyone living in the areas of the thefts to check for losses and to report any to police.

The Orange County Register reports that Fu was a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist at University High School in 2005.
