Adult Stepson and Juvenile Arrested in Slaying of Nightclub Promoter

BERKELEY (Oct. 8, 2008) — A four-month investigation by Berkeley homicide detectives has lead to the arrests of the victim’s adult stepson and a fifteen-year-old boy for the slaying of a nightclub promoter.

Forensic evidence was the key to cracking the case.

Charles “Chuck” Faison, 39, was found shot to death inside his home in the 2000 block of Emerson Street in Berkeley on June 20. Faison was a club promoter with O’Shea Entertainment, which hosted various events in San Francisco, including a regular Tuesday night Hip-Hop showcase at Club Six called Da Showcase, according to published reports about the case.

Reward money was offered in an attempt to draw eyewitnesses to aid the investigation, with the city of Berkeley posting a $15,000 reward and Crime Stoppers of Alameda County posting a $2,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of suspects, but no witness ever contacted police, according to Berkeley police spokesman Andrew Frankel.

“In the absence of an eyewitness willing to come forward, it comes down to burning the midnight oil and officer elbow grease in working the case to its conclusion,” Frankel said. “It’s all about good crime scene investigation.”

“Gunpowder residue” and forensic evidence led to the two arrests in this case, reported Frankel.

At about 10:20 a.m. Monday Oct. 6 Berkeley police served a search warrant at a home in the 2200 block of 33rd Street in Oakland and arrested Deontae Faison, 20, the victim’s stepson, who will be charged as an accessory to the homicide, according to Frankel.

By 5 p.m. Monday the suspected shooter, a 15-year-old male from Berkeley, had turned himself in at Berkeley police headquarters. Police have released few details about the youth because of his age, except to say that he will be charged with the homicide of Charles Faison.

Deontae Faison is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. The unidentified fifteen-year-old is being held without bail at Alameda County Juvenile Hall in San Leandro.
