Victim Sleeps Through Burglary

Suspect Picked Up the Intoxicated Victim

SANTA CRUZ—The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a ‘Bad Samaritan’ who helped an intoxicated man find his way home, then burglarized the house while the 66-year-old victim slept.  They are looking for a 20-year-old Hispanic male who was wearing black shorts, and a white t-shirt with black shoes and white socks.

The victim told Sheriff’s Deputies that about 6:40 pm last Sunday he was intoxicated and attempted to walk home. When he reached Sunny Cove Drive he realized that he was too drunk to walk and decided to flag down a passing vehicle and ask for a ride.

A short while later, a late model dark colored import with a single male driver, and a girl toddler, likely his daughter, stopped to help the victim. They gave him a ride home and helped him to the door. They even helped him get ready for bed. The so-called ‘Bad Samaritan’ even went as far as to wait inside the home while the victim fell asleep. Then, with the elderly victim asleep, he had free range of the house and was able to load his vehicle with numerous items.

The suspect took two large screens televisions, some furniture, a laptop computer and golf clubs. He even took two suits and a tuxedo from the man’s closet all over a period of four hours that he was in the house.

The suspect did make an attempt to conceal his identity by wiping his fingerprints from the door handle, but he showed complete disregard for the surveillance camera that was outside the door. At one point he even looked up at the camera while he leaving. He did however close the door behind him.

The public should be careful when getting rides to anyone you don’t know.” Santa Cruz Count Sheriff Sergeant Kelly Kent said, “In this case he should have called a cab, as he was only a few blocks way from his house.”

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff Office is now looking for the burglar, and requests that anyone with any information regarding the identity of the suspect or the toddler to please call the Sheriff’s Office at (831) 471 -1121.

Update 10/03 – 20-year-old Brandon Munoz Hernandez of Watsonville was arrested on Thursday, October 2. More details to follow on CrimeVoice.com.
