Two Arrested in Visalia for Allegedly Shooting at a Moving Vehicle

VISALIA – Two men were arrested in connection to a shooting that happened early Wednesday morning, in which a victim was chased and fired at while in his car.

The Visalia Police Department arrested Michael Orenelas Jr. and Joey Leija, both 22, on allegations of attempted homicide and evading police.

The incident happened in the early morning hours on Wednesday. The victim called police and told them that he was in his vehicle when two men in another vehicle began firing at him. The men allegedly continued to chase and shoot at the victim while driving down Caldwell Avenue near Dans Street.

Police located the suspects around 4:30 a.m. near Tulare Avenue and Akers Street and attempted to pull them over. The driver failed to stop, so a pursuit began, authorities said.

Using special techniques designed to disable the vehicle, police were able to immobilize the suspects’ car near Demaree Street and Meadow Avenue. The driver was arrested at the scene, but the passenger fled on foot. He was located a few minutes later on a nearby roof. Police seized two firearms.

The victim was not injured during the shooting. Detectives have ruled that the shooting was gang related.
