Suspect Arrested after Robbing A Business And Stealing A Car

Suspect Was Armed With A Brick

SALINAS—Officers with the Salinas Police Department have arrested 22-year-old Salinas resident Jose Manuel Ramirez for allegedly robbing a business on the 900 block of Acosta Plaza, and stealing a vehicle.

On Monday, at 9:30 Officers with the Salinas Police Department responded to the 900 block of Acosta Plaza and Sanborn Road on a report of a robbery in progress. Police learned from the victim that Ramirez entered the business on the 900 block of Acosta Plaza armed with a brick and demanded money.

Ramirez left the business after taking an undisclosed amount of money. A short time later, he stole a Dodge Neon, and was seen headed northbound on Sanborn Road in the vehicle. However it was not a clean getaway, because both the victims from the business and the stolen vehicle were able to follow him. They followed him to Williams Road were they were able to flag down police.

Now with police hot on his trail, Ramirez abandoned the stolen vehicle near the intersection of Garner Avenue and Williams Road, and ran into a residential area. Police set up a perimeter in the area.

They used two K-9 units in a house-to-house search within the perimeter.  One of the dogs found him hiding in a cactus in the yard of a nearby home. “Ramirez surrendered after being confronted by the K-9.” Salinas Police Commander Sheldon Bryan wrote, “He was not bit or injured by the police dog.”

Ramirez was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail and charged with armed robbery, vehicle theft and evading police. Both the stolen vehicle and the money were recovered and returned to the owners.

Ramirez had been arrested earlier this year, on May 22, on charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, driving without a license, and conspiracy to falsely charge or arrest – likely implicating someone in the crime he committed. Details of that incident were not available. He was also arrested in July for DUI and driving with a suspended license.
