Standoff Suspect Wields Sword in Faceoff with Visalia Police

VISALIA – A man who allegedly hit a family member with a sword and then swung it at officers through a door was placed under arrest on Wednesday.

Officers with the Visalia Police Department arrested 45-year-old Julian Felix following a 90-minute standoff Wednesday evening.

Police were called to a home on Church Street near Chavez Street in Visalia around 4:30 p.m. in response to a fight that broke out between Felix and another man in the home. When officers arrived at the scene, they learned that the victim had been struck with a sword and Felix had barricaded himself in his bedroom.

When officers approached the bedroom, Felix thrust the sword through the bedroom door to keep them away.

Officers called the SWAT team out, but crisis negotiators were eventually able to talk Felix out of the room and then out of the house before any action needed to be taken by the SWAT team.

Felix was arrested and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim suffered minor injuries.
