Off-Duty Deputies Pursue, Arrest Bike Thieves

BAKERSFIELD — Three suspects were arrested by three off-duty Kern County Sherriff’s deputies for stealing a bike on Tuesday evening in northwest Bakersfield.

Two unidentified 17-year-old suspects and 18-year-old David Craddock were all booked into the Kern County Juvenile Hall and Jail on charges of petty theft and making terrorist threats.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began at around 6 p.m. on May 19, when three off duty Kern County Sheriff’s deputies riding bicycles on the Bakersfield bike path witnessed three suspects stealing a bicycle near the Chipotle Restaurant on Stockdale Highway.

When the deputies tried to detain the suspects, they fled; two on foot and one riding away on the stolen bicycle.

All three suspects were eventually caught a short distance away from where the chase began. When searched, deputies said they found one suspect to be in possession of a knife, which he threatened to use during the pursuit.
