Man Catches Ex-Girlfriend with Another Man, Attempts to Set Her on Fire

SAN BERNARDINO – An 18-year-old man was arrested for trying to light his ex-girlfriend on fire and physically assaulting her early Thursday morning after catching her with another man.

Police said that Eduardo Hulises Rios, of San Bernardino, set fire to his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend after showing up at her residence and discovering her with another man.

When officers arrived at 1952 North Genevieve Ave., they discovered that Rios found the victim, the mother of his child, sleeping on the couch. Rios, according to police, used a small amount of gasoline in a plastic bottle, poured it on the unidentified male, then lit the gasoline and the couch on fire. Both victims were asleep, said police.

Upon being lit on fire, the two victims jumped up and a physical altercation occurred while Rios punched the female victim in the face, which caused minor injuries. “(Rios) was still at the residence when the initial officer arrived,” said Lt. Rich Lawhead, spokesman for San Bernardino Police.

When additional police units arrived, Rios had fled the scene, he said. The initial officer was assisting the victims, which allowed Rios to escape.
The physical altercation spilled into the front yard, said Lawhead. The initial fire was put out before police arrived, he said.
Eventually, Rios was discovered on a nearby street and taken into custody, he said.

Rios was arrested on charges of arson, domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon and was being held at California Department of Corrections.
