Madera Pharmacy Owner Shoots, Kills Armed Robber

MADERA – A robber was shot and killed after he and his accomplice barged into a Madera pharmacy with guns firing and the owner pulled out a gun of his own.

Aquilla Bailey

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Almond Avenue Pharmacy at the southeast corner of Almond and Emily Way. Two armed men wearing ski masks barged into the pharmacy through the unlocked back door and immediately started shooting.

The owner and his mother ducked behind the counter, where the owner was able to grab a gun and return fire. He hit one of the robbers, 31-year-old Aquilla Bailey of Fresno, who fell to the floor and then staggered away from the pharmacy. He made it a block before he collapsed. Bailey later died at the hospital.

The pharmacy owner’s mother was shot in the leg during the gunfire exchange. She was treated and released from Madera Community Hospital.

Police have not yet identified the second suspect. They believe the pharmacy was targeted specifically for the drugs on hand.

Bailey was wanted in connection to a home invasion in August of last year in which three men broke into a home in Fresno, tied up the 82-year-old woman inside and fled with her property. The other two men involved in that crime were identified as 22-year-old Atari Moffett of the Playboys gang and 26-year-old Derick White, a Dogpound gang associate.

Anyone with information about Tuesday’s crime is asked to call the police at (559) 675-4200 or Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP.
