Kentfield Woman Rolled Up for Felony Theft of Bicycles

SAN RAFAEL – Three Marin County law enforcement agencies collaborated in busting a high-end bicycle theft ring on June 24th. Several search warrants were executed at locations throughout the county, which included a residence at 1135 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in Kentfield, a storage facility on Industrial Way in Greenbrae and a motor home in Corte Madera.

Over 130 high-end mountain bikes and road bikes were recovered, including one bicycle stolen earlier this month from a student at Sir Francis Drake High School.

Rebecca Hammett, a 48-year-old woman from Kentfield was arrested and booked into Marin County Jail on charges of receiving known stolen property, a felony. Bail was set at $30,000. Hammett described herself to authorities as a bicycle mechanic. She also has a history of conflicts with the law, including charges last year of DUI, possession of controlled substance and paraphernalia, and battery on a peace officer.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating each of the recovered bicycles for identification in the hopes of returning them to their original owners. The office has posted photographs of each bicycle online for public review. These can be seen at the Marin Independent Journal. Any claimant will have to provide serial number(s) or other uniquely identifiable characteristics in order to claim their property.

The local law enforcement agencies involved were the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Problem Oriented Policing Unit, the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force and the San Rafael Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit.
