A homeless man who attacked Palo Alto Police during a confrontation was wanted in a homicide that had occurred the previous evening.
34-year-old Ryan Goodson of Fresno was arrested for fighting with police officers when he refused to cooperate after running throughout several private yards, and eventually running through Da Hookah Spot on University Avenue, when police confronted him.
Goodson was able to pull off the officer’s hand gun from his belt, however he was unable to remove the gun from its holster, allowing officers time to restrain Goodson through the use of a taser and other restraints, and then detain him.
On March 26, Goodson appeared before a judge and pleaded no contest to numerous charges of assault and attempted murder of an officer. The District Attorney’s office is looking into a eight year stint in lockup. However, the San Jose Police Department will be looking for a much stiffer sentence for the homicide Goodson is now accused of.
According to San Jose Police Sgt. Heather Randol, “Suspect Ryan Goodson has been formally charged with murder in the stabbing death of victim Jason Rosario, which occurred on the sidewalk in the 100 Block of South Market Street on February 6th, 2014, at approximately 12:20 A.M”.
Identifying the suspect was crucial in their case. According to Lt. Michael Kihmm from the San Jose Police Department Homicide Unit, “I want to recognize the San Jose Police Department’s patrol officers who initially responded to this call. Their work at the initial crime scene by preserving evidence was crucial in the identification of the suspect, and resulted in building a solid case. This is especially notable because the homicide occurred in the middle of night and during a heavy rainstorm.”
