Davis Rottweiler Rescuer Denies Neglect Allegations, Wants Dogs Back

After three dead and several other allegedly starving dogs were discovered at a rural Davis canine sanctuary, the facility’s owner asserted she was wrongly accused of animal neglect.

“It’s been blown out of proportion,” said Elaine Greenberg, President/Operator of the Second Chance Rottweiler Rescue. “I think I should get my dogs back.” Greenberg complained in a Davis Enterprise interview that Yolo Sheriff’s officials ordered her put on “an involuntary mental health hold. They said I wasn’t fit.”

Yolo Sheriff’s Captain Larry Ceccettini cited patient privacy laws and therefore could not confirm Greenberg’s complaint. Ceccettini said a veterinarian is examining the dogs to ascertain the length of time they were not fed or given water. This investigation will be extensive. “Each affected dog could involve additional charges, but that’s up to the DA’s Office.”

“I’ve always been interested in Rottweilers,” Greenberg said.

According to Animal Services Sgt. Mike Nevis, the three dead animals were “very well decomposed.” Also, the kennels were “littered with fecal matter and there was no food or water available to the dogs.”

Greenberg disagreed. She asserted she fed all the dogs every day but did not leave food in their bowls because it attracted bugs. She also said she daily fills the water bowls but had not gotten around to that task when Sgt. Nevis arrived to inspect Second Chance. Greenberg also said the confiscated dogs’ emaciation was due to “orthopedic problems.”

The Yolo County DA’s office will decide whether to file charges against Greenberg in the next few days.

Update: On Friday, August 15, Elaine Greenberg was found dead in her home. The cause of her death is being investigated. It has been speculated that her failing health contributed to her problems taking care of the dogs, and may have led to her passing of natural causes.
