Citrus Heights PD Investigates Shooting

Jeri Higby was arrested after shooting his former roommate, who apparently returned to harvest some of Higby’s marijuana crop

The Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD) is currently investigating a shooting during an attempted marijuana plant robbery, according to an official press release.

Just before 10am on Wednesday, October 17, CHPD officers reportedly responded to a report of a shooting that had just occurred in the 7700 Block of Bierston Street. Initial information indicated that resident, Jeri Higby, 37, had shot at a male who was attempting to break in to his home.

Officers arrived and reportedly located a 34-year-old man in the rear yard of the residence suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. The man’s injuries are not considered life threatening.

CHPD Detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the event and found Higby reportedly had an ongoing dispute with his former roommate over an amount of marijuana. The former roommate arrived at the property that morning and attempted to take marijuana plants from an outdoor grow in the rear yard. Higby fired a shotgun at his former roommate after a short argument. The roommate was struck in the torso and is expected to survive his injuries.

Neighbors on Bierston Street were probably unaware that Higby had a significant marijuana growing operation in his backyard.

Higby was arrested for assault with a firearm and booked at Sacramento County.

CHPD strongly encourages citizens to notify the police immediately if they believe they have been victimized or are about to become a victim of a crime, by dialing 911 in an emergency or at 916-727-5500 for non emergency reports. Citizens may also make reports online at citrusheightspd.net.

UPDATE 7/17/2014 – After 21 months, it has now been reported that Jeri Higby was acquitted of the charges against him. A friend of his, Dawn Epley, posted the comment seen below, as well as another one on the mugshot photo above that reads “JERI HIGBY ON JULY 10.2014 WAS ACQUITTED IN THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT NOT GUILTY Victims getting locked up taken away from there love ones . Something is wrong I like to thank Mr, Russell Miller criminal defense attorney thank you Dawn Epley”.

She also posted a rather poetic comment on the CitySearch website as a review for the Miller Law Group:

Mr.Miller gets the truth out and if your not in the wrong

Then Miller will stand his grown

And I m glad we had Miller
