Accused of Torching His Wife, Target of Manhunt Arrested

Ventura County – What began on January 5th as a horrific incident, the result of an apparently extreme and violent domestic dispute in which three young children reportedly witnessed their father beat his wife, pour gasoline on her, and light her on fire, became a massive manhunt for the alleged perpetrator and husband of the victim, Juan Soria Hernandez, 31.

With a full and complete description of Hernandez and his vehicle quickly disseminated through numerous media sources, it was only a matter of time before an arrest would ensue.

Apparently appreciating the reality of his situation and the likelihood of his eventual arrest, on the night of January 8th Hernandez—who had escaped to Bakersfield by then—identified himself to local law enforcement and surrendered. According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Cpt. Don Aguilar, he was “arrested by law enforcement officers on a warrant for the attempted murder of his wife”.

Hernandez was summarily transported to Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on charges of attempted murder, arson causing great bodily injury, aggravated mayhem, torture, and child endangerment. Pending his arraignment on that menu of charges, his bail was set at $1,000,000.

Aguilar further reported that “the victim is in critical condition and is being treated at an area hospital”, while the children were uninjured and are being caref for by family members.
