A man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual battery after allegedly attacking a woman at a park in Galt.

Officers responded to Lake Canyon Park on the morning of November 2 and detained 25-year-old Manuel Avila, a local transient.

The alleged victim, as well as other witnesses, told officers that Avila had been acting strangely. After keeping an eye on Avila for a while and growing increasingly uncomfortable, the victim decided to move to a different area of the park.

When she returned for some of her belongings, police say, Avila jumped on her and fondled her chest area in the ensuing struggle. A man who’d witnessed the struggle pulled Avila off the victim and detained him until officers arrived.

Avila was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony sexual battery, felony false imprisonment, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
