A Red Bluff man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an alleged physical altercation resulted in another man’s death, according to the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office.

Around midday on Wednesday, October 21, deputies were dispatched to an area just east of 70 Byron Avenue, where they found 35-year-old John Edmond Weaver Jr. of Red Bluff lying face down and unresponsive in an open field. He was later pronounced deceased.

Major Crimes Unit investigators gathered from numerous witness statements that Weaver had gotten into some sort of physical altercation with 34-year-old David Anthony Chavez, also of Red Bluff, outside an apartment near Mina Avenue, during which Chavez allegedly beat Chavez about the head several times and put him in a chokehold.

A bystander soon intervened and broke up the fight, at which point Weaver walked off. Deputies found him dead just 30 yards away. Chavez was then interviewed and ultimately arrested on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $1 million.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information relevant to the case is encouraged to contact Captain Dave Kain, Lieutenant Jeff Garrett, or Detective Rob Bakken of the Major Crimes Unit at (530) 529 – 7920.
