Truckee Police intervene after man allegedly threatens to blow up own trailer

Truckee Police have announced the arrest of a man whom they say had threatened to commit suicide by igniting the propane tank in his trailer.

On the afternoon of October 16, officers responded to Coachland Mobile Home Park on Pioneer Trail, where 32-year-old Justin Orts had reportedly threatened to kill himself by lighting his propane tank on fire, which posed significant to other residents and pretty much anyone who happened to be nearby. Police say Orts had also told dispatch he planned to ignite the tank once he saw officers.

Responding officers noted detectable levels of carbon monoxide gas and an odor of propane near Orts’ trailer. After establishing a safe perimeter, negotiations began. CHP, fire personnel, and specialty units from the Sheriff’s Office, including crisis negotiators, also responded to the scene.

Police say that around 7 PM, Orts tossed a propane tank and what looked like a handgun (later found to be a pellet gun) out one of the trailer windows. Shortly thereafter, Orts came outside and was taken into custody without further incident.

He was later booked at the Nevada County Jail on suspicion of criminal threats, possession of a destructive device, and resisting and delaying peace officers.
