Man on felony probation caught with allegedly stolen handgun

A man on felony probation for assault has been arrested again after being caught with an allegedly stolen handgun, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.

Around 1:30 AM on Saturday, June 27, an officer on patrol on the 900 block of Sunset Avenue came across a vehicle and what appeared to be a man sleeping inside.

After approaching the vehicle, seeing that the man appeared to be sleeping face down, and making unsuccessful attempts to wake him, the officer called medical and fire personnel to the scene out of concern for the man’s welfare.

Eventually the man — identified as 24-year-old Julio Antonio Hernandez — woke up and got out. At some point soon thereafter, the officer found a loaded and reportedly stolen .9mm handgun in the vehicle.

A records check also revealed Hernandez was on felony probation for two different felony assault convictions, as well as misdemeanor DUI, which legally prohibits him from possessing firearms at all.

Hernandez was ultimately arrested and booked at the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, felon in possession of a stolen firearm, and violation of probation.
