After 2:30 a.m. on June 28, a fight occurred in front of a motel in the 1400 block of Ocean Street.

Arriving officers discovered the 46-year-old Jamaican victim of the unprovoked attack.

32-year-old Cody Chavez apparently slung racial epithets as well as his fists.

The victim was taken to the trauma center for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Chavez was arrested and booked for battery with serious bodily injury, violation of civil rights causing violent injury and resisting arrest.

The Santa Cruz Police concludes, “There is no place for this heinous behavior in our community or our country, and we will not tolerate it.”
