DUI suspect accused of striking pedestrians in Santa Cruz; 1 dead

A man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a collision that killed one and injured another in Santa Cruz.

Just after 2 PM on Monday, June 15, police responded to a report of a traffic collision at intersection of Murray Street and Mott Avenue, where a vehicle had reportedly struck a pedestrian.

Two victims, a 44-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl whom police say are relatives of one another, were hospitalized with injuries. By that night, the woman had succumbed to her injuries. The younger victim remained in stable condition.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Mark Mendoza Zembrano, remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.
