On the night of June 10th a Chico resident called the Chico Police Department to report that his neighbor fired a gunshot in his backyard.

Officers “and a representative from the Butte County Behavioral Health’s, Mobile Crisis Unit” arrived to the residence in the 220 block of E. 8th Street.

A perimeter was set up and neighbors were alerted to the action.

Contact was made with 54-year-old Stephen Barry, who came out of the residence and was detained.

Apparently Barry had used meth and inhaled CO2 canisters earlier, leading up to the firing of his 12-gauge shotgun.

Officers located and confiscated the gun at the residence.

Barry was arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia. The firearm was taken as evidence and Barry was booked into the Butte County Jail.

No one suffered any injuries in this incident.
