Man found asleep in vehicle with gun next to him indicted on federal charges

A Mendocino County man has been indicted on federal gun charges in connection to a 2019 incident which he was reportedly found sleeping his truck with a gun next to him on the front seat.

Just after 7:30 AM on September 26, 2019, a Tribal Police officer came across 33-year-old Luis John Oliver sleeping in his truck, which was parked in the middle of the road and facing the wrong direction on the 76000 block of Crawford Road in Covelo.

The officer also noticed what appeared to be a black pistol-type firearm on the front passenger seat. Mendocino County deputies were then called in for assistance and took Oliver into custody.

Upon searching the truck, deputies located the firearm, which was equipped with a large-capacity drum-style magazine and a live .9mm cartridge in the chamber. The magazine was also loaded with several live cartridges.

Deputies also found several other calibers of live ammo and approximately .7 grams of methamphetamine.

Though Oliver was initially booked on suspicion of felon in possession of a firearm and related charges, as well as possession of a controlled substance, he has since been indicted on federal charges of felon in possession of ammunition and felon in possession of a firearm.

He is now in federal custody as of March 4.
