Somerset woman accused of purchasing gift cards with counterfeit cash

A Somerset woman has been arrested on suspicion of passing counterfeit currency after allegedly paying for a prepaid Visa gift card with counterfeit cash.

Around 4:15 AM on January 14th, an individual purchased the $400 card at the Safeway on South McDowell Boulevard in Petaluma. Just after 2 AM on January 16th, someone bought a $500 prepaid Visa gift card with counterfeit hundreds at the same store.

An employee managed to get a description of the vehicle and its direction of travel. The suspect was soon identified as 41-year-old Amber R. Cook.

Cook was located and arrested a short time later.

During booking, police reportedly found suspected narcotics concealed in her bra.

Police say they are also investigating two similar incidents of counterfeit currency use but have not said whether Cook is a suspect.
