K9 assists in apprehending reckless DUI driver

PALM SPRINGS – On the evening of January 10, as an officer with the Palm Springs Police Department was int he parking lot in the 400 block of South Sunrise Way, he saw someone driving erratically.

The officer suspected DUI and tried to stop the driver, who instead fled and led a pursuit.

52-year-old Robert Martini stopped the vehicle he was driving near Airline Drive and East Plaimor Avenue, only to take off again.

Martini stopped again in a parking lot in the 400 block of South Farrell Drive but did not obey officers commands to exit the vehicle. a K9 came to assist in an arrest and Martini assaulted the K9.

Before being taken into custidy, Martini went by a local hospital for treatment for injuries incurred from the K9.

The PSPD summarized – “Martini was arrested for 2800.2(a) CVC (Felony Evading Police), 600(a) PC (Assault of a Police K9), 23152(f) CVC (Driving Under the Influence of Drugs) and 148(a)(1) PC (Resisting a peace officer.)”
