A Cotati man already out on bail in a drug and firearm case has been arrested again after allegedly being caught with a loaded handgun.

Around 11:40 PM on Monday, December 9, a Sonoma County deputy pulled over 28-year-old Uriel Alvarado along Highway 37 near the intersection of Noble Road. When he noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle as Alvarado rolled down his window, the deputy saw that there was half a joint in the car.

Though marijuana is legal under California law, it must be kept inside a sealed container when being transported in a vehicle.

The deputy searched the vehicle and reportedly discovered over three pounds of marijuana and a black 9mm Glock handgun with a live round in the chamber.

As it turned out, Alvarado was already on bail in relation to a prior narcotics and property crimes arrest from October.

He has since been booked again at the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of possessing more than one ounce or marijuana, felony charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, convicted felon in possession of a concealed firearm, having a loaded firearm in public, and committing a felony while out on bail.

He is now being held on $30,000 bond.
