A 30-year-old Cathedral City homeless man has been arrested on suspicion of setting a truck containing several propane tanks on fire, causing multiple explosions.

Local police and fire personnel responded to the Denny’s parking lot at around 9:45 PM on Friday, November 22, to find a pick-up truck on fire.

Police say an unknown number of propane tanks being carried in the truck bed also ignited and exploded.

Officers also detained a man at the scene, identified as 30-year-old Keenon Hiler, who said he’d started the fire in an attempt to end his life.

He had no relationship or acquaintance with the owner of the truck, who owns a hot-air balloon service. Damage to the vehicle and balloon apparatus is estimated to be around $100,000.

No injuries were reported.
