The Salinas Police Department is asking for the public’s help concerning an assault that resulted in a death:

“On November 6, 2019, the Salinas Police Department Investigations Bureau was notified by the Monterey County Coroner’s Office that Robert Darryl Mooring, age 58, had died due to complications from a possible assault that occurred days earlier.

The investigation has revealed Mooring, who listed himself as transient, had been assaulted on the morning of Tuesday, October 29th in the area of E. Lake St. and Soledad St. Although Mooring had been injured, he did not seek medical attention at that time.

On November 1st, Mooring was taken to the emergency room at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital by a social worker who assists the homeless population in the lower Soledad St. area.

The social worker was concerned with Mooring’s condition from the assault and convinced him he needed to go to the hospital. Mooring was admitted to the hospital where his condition worsened.

Ultimately, the infection and complications that led to his death were a direct result of the injuries sustained in the assault. This case is being investigated as a homicide.

The Investigations Bureau is asking for information from anyone that may know what occurred to Mr. Mooring on October 29th.

If you believe you have information, please contact Detective Gabriela Contreras at (831) 758- 7971; or at gabriega@ci.salinas.ca.us. If you would like to remain anonymous you can call the Anonymous Tip Line at (831) 775-4222.”
