The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of 34-year-old Mark Anthony Silveira Jr. in connection to a shooting at a homeless camp in Yuba City earlier this week.

Around 9:30 AM on Monday, December 2, local police received a report of a gunshot victim in the area of Burns Drive and Putman Avenue, where a homeless camp had been set up near the levee.

Since the area falls under jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the scene with assistance from officers and discovered two victims with gunshot wounds. Both were hospitalized for treatment.

The next day, December 3, deputies identified and arrested Silveira Jr. as the primary suspect.

Officials say Silveira had allegedly been in the middle of stealing items from the victim’s camp when the victim and his friend confronted him, to which Silveira responded by shooting them both.

He has since been booked on suspicion of attempted murder, possession of stolen property, burglary, felon in possession of a weapon, and drug-related crimes.
