Watch out for phone scams this holiday season

The Woodland Police Department reminds its citizens to be alert to phone scams via the following statement on their official Facebook page –

“PHONE SCAM ALERT: The Woodland Police Department has been made aware of a phone scam in which the caller claims to be from the City of Woodland Finance Department stating a water bill is over due and demanding payment (often via gift cards).

The City of Woodland Finance Department will NEVER call you about an overdue water bill. They send out notices by mail and hang things on your door if you are in danger of having your water shut off.

Please share this with friends and neighbors and remember to always call a known customer service number that you find on your monthly statements or a city department phone number if you receive these types of calls; do not call the number that they ask you to call.

To learn more about phone scams, including how to identify them, please read the Federal Trade Commission’s article on phone scams: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0208-phone-scams.”
