A Newport Beach Man was arrested for shooting off a gun inside his apartment, inciting a nearby high school to initiate a “lockout” on its campus.

The Newport Beach Police Department responded to what they thought might be a domestic violence incident at the residence, which was located in the 800 block of Irvine Avenue, just after 8:30 AM on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.

Upon arrival, they found 24-year-old Jesse Taylor Sweeny, who had shot the gun but had not caused any injuries. He was arrested on a “shoot at inhabitant dwelling/vehicle” charge, according to the written release.

Newport Harbor High School, located on the same block as the incident, initially implemented a “lockout” to protect students and staff from the potential threat to their safety. The “lockout” was lifted soon after investigation revealed that no threat remained.
