Two men face murder charges after a bar fight ended in a man being hit and killed by a car in Santa Fe Springs.

Police responded to the site where the victim, identified as 21-year-old Ricky Munoz of Long Beach, was discovered at about 1:00 AM on September 18, 2019. Munoz was found in the middle of the roadway in the 11700 block of Telegraph Road, “suffering from what appeared to be a traumatic head injury,” according to Whittier Police. He did not survive his wounds.

The incident began at Maggie’s Pub at 11900 Telegraph Road, where Munoz’s mother said he was with his sister. A fight broke out, in which someone stole Munoz’s hat. Munoz chased after the thief. The altercation ended when Munoz was struck by a passing vehicle, a security car.

The driver, who claimed to not have seen Munoz in the road, remained at the scene of the accident and was not arrested.

The following day, Whittier Police arrested two suspects who were allegedly involved in the altercation before Munoz was struck. The suspects, 21-year-old Anthony Edward Varela of Montebello and 21-year-old Kyle Michael Guinea-Mangubat of Pico Rivera, were booked at Whittier Police Department with a bail set at $2 million each. They now face charges for Munoz’s murder.
